The label problem nobody tells you about
As a formulation scientist, here's the thing I wish more shoppers knew: "hard water shampoo" is not a regulated claim. Any shampoo can print it. There's no test a product must pass, no ingredient it must contain, before those words go on the front of the bottle. So the front label tells you what the brand wants to sell; only the ingredient list tells you what the formula can do.
And what a hard water formula must do is specific. Hard water, which in most Indian cities runs 200–500 ppm CaCO₃, deposits mineral ions that bond to the hair shaft. Ordinary surfactants are built to lift oil and dirt; they don't break mineral bonds. That takes a chelating agent: a molecule shaped to grab metal ions and hold them in a rinse-away complex. No chelator, no mineral removal. It really is that binary.
The 60-second label test
- Flip the bottle and read the ingredient list (or zoom the ingredient photo on the product page). Search for the chelator families: EDTA (Disodium EDTA, Tetrasodium EDTA), citrate/citric acid, phytic acid, gluconate, sodium phytate.
- Found one? The formula can genuinely chelate. Where it sits in the list hints at how much is in there.
- Found nothing? Whatever the front label says, the product cannot specifically remove mineral buildup. It may still be a pleasant shampoo. It's just not doing the hard water job.
- Now do the maths. Divide price by millilitres. A ₹764 / 220 ml bottle is ₹3.5 per ml; a ₹1,200 / 200 ml salon bottle is ₹6 per ml for the same chelation chemistry.

Honestly? Because most shoppers never ask, and vague words sell. What a real chelating shampoo still won't do
