The short answer: Your scalp is happiest at pH 4.5–5.5, the zone where the acid mantle stays intact and your cuticles stay sealed shut. Go below pH 3 or above pH 7 and that protective barrier starts to give. Right after a swim, when pool water (pH 7–8) has already pushed you into alkaline territory, a pH 4–5 rinse is what pulls things back before the damage compounds.

The science of scalp pH

Your scalp's actual sweet spot is pH 4.5–5.5, a slightly acidic zone where your skin's microbiome stays stable, the acid mantle (that thin film of sebum and sweat doing the protective work) stays functional, and hair holds together. Hair is largely keratin protein, and keratin's structure is stable only in acidic conditions. Push the pH above 5.5 and those keratin bonds start to relax; the cuticle, the overlapping protein plates that seal moisture in, begins to swell and lift.

Most tap water runs pH 6.8–8.0. Most conventional shampoo runs pH 8–10. Every step up that scale disrupts the acid mantle a little further. Chlorinated pool water averages pH 7–8; saltwater sits even higher, closer to 8. For regular swimmers, that repeated high-pH exposure leaves hair chronically porous, more open to mineral embedding, oxidative damage, and the green tint a lot of swimmers know well. That tint is copper depositing on lifted cuticles, not chlorine.

Why pH matters: structural damage

Once the cuticle lifts, the cortex underneath, where hair's colour and elasticity actually live, is exposed. Copper compounds bind to the lifted cuticle and oxidise into that brassy or green cast. Salt crystallises in the open gaps, and calcium and magnesium from hard water settle in right alongside it. That's the buildup no amount of brushing removes.

Dermatology research is consistent here: hair cuticles lie flat and smooth in acidic conditions, while alkaline products raise and roughen the cuticle so moisture escapes easily (Gavazzoni Dias et al., Int J Trichology 2014). This isn't a texture preference, it's structural chemistry. Repeated high-pH exposure is associated with breakage, split ends and scalp sensitivity, not with hair loss.

pH 5.45: scalp-matched and mild

deSal is formulated at pH 5.45, within hair's healthy 4.5–5.5 range and close to the scalp's own pH, so both scalp and hair get a real shot at recovering after pool time or hard water. Conventional clarifying shampoos often run pH 8–9, built to strip buildup aggressively. A 5.45 formula does things differently: it mirrors your scalp's natural baseline instead of roughing up the cuticle to get results.

The logic is straightforward. Post-swim, you're sitting at pH 7–8, already elevated. A 5.45 rinse brings you back toward that 4.5–5.5 ideal without overshooting into territory that just triggers a new kind of irritation. That matters because it frees the actives to do their actual job. In the swimmers formula, that's stable Vitamin C (Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate) reducing chlorine to harmless chloride, plus Disodium EDTA and Citric Acid chelating, basically binding and lifting away, metal ions, instead of fighting cuticle damage at the same time. These are established mechanisms in chemistry; measured in-hair efficacy is still being lab-tested.

Both deSal shampoos are formulated at pH 5.45: the Hard Water Defense Shampoo and the Swimmers Wellness Shampoo (both work out to roughly ₹4 per ml; check the site for current pack pricing). Two honest caveats worth stating plainly: that 5.45 is our own in-house measurement, not yet a third-party lab number, and pH is only the gentle-wash part of the story anyway. What actually clears the damage is the chemistry, Disodium EDTA chelating hard-water minerals and copper, stable Vitamin C neutralising chlorine, with D-Panthenol, Hyaluronic Acid, Argan Oil and Niacinamide countering the dryness and protein weakness those leave behind. Both products are now in-vivo tested (Mascot Spincontrol, on healthy volunteers): dermatologically tested, clinically tested and non-irritant for skin safety, which is a separate thing from the chlorine/mineral-removal efficacy test that's still in progress.

The post-swim damage cascade

Here's what happens over repeated swims when you're not rinsing with pH in mind:

1. Immediate: Pool water (pH 7–8) tips your hair's pH into alkaline range. Cuticles lift, just slightly at first. 2. During exposure: Chlorine oxidises hair pigment while salt and metal deposits start binding to the lifted cuticles. 3. Post-swim: Rinse with a high-pH shampoo and the cuticles stay open longer, giving mineral buildup time to settle in. 4. Cumulative: Somewhere around 10–20 swims without acid-pH recovery, hair turns dry, dull and prone to breakage. Blonde hair shows green, brunette hair shows brassy tones.

A pH 4–5 post-swim rinse interrupts that cycle by closing the cuticle before chlorine and metals fully lodge in.

Is pH 5.45 safe for daily use?

Yes. A pH 5.45 formula is not harsher than a standard shampoo, if anything it's gentler, because your scalp naturally tolerates and prefers acidic conditions. Daily use works with your skin's chemistry rather than against it.

That said, we haven't published a formal daily-use safety profile across every demographic (adults, children, sensitive scalps). Age-specific and frequency guidance, whether that's after every swim, daily, or a few times a week, should wait for clinical validation. The pH itself carries no known risk; how the specific formulation performs across different groups is still under review.

Choosing products by pH

When you're evaluating a hair product, ask for its pH or check it yourself with a test strip:

FAQ

Why is my hair green after swimming if I'm already using shampoo? If your post-swim shampoo is pH 8+, you're opening cuticles further at the exact moment you should be closing them. The green tint is copper deposition, and a high-pH shampoo compounds it. Switch to a pH 4–5 rinse instead.

Is pH 5.45 safe for kids' hair? The pH itself is safe, it's normal for scalp skin in general. We haven't published safety or efficacy testing specific to children, so check the product label or reach out for age-specific guidance before use.

Can I just use vinegar instead of a pH 5.45 product? Vinegar is pH 2.5–3, far more acidic than what you want. It can work occasionally, but used regularly it risks brittleness over time. A pH 5.45 formula is gentler and built for sustained use.

Is lower pH always better for clarifying? No, and this is where people trip up. pH determines how the product treats your hair, its cuticle state, not what chemistry actually removes chlorine or metals. That's the job of actives like Disodium EDTA and Citric Acid (chelators), plus stable Vitamin C in the swimmers formula. pH 5.45 just makes sure that removal happens without piling on more cuticle damage.

Should I use pH 5.45 shampoo every day or only after swimming? Daily use is safe and often genuinely helpful if you're a swimmer, dealing with hard water, or have a sensitive scalp. If you're not a swimmer, you may not need it daily. Listen to your hair, if it starts feeling drier, scale back frequency.
